Full-time, Year Round Building, Equipment and Grounds Maintenance Manager

The Ferguson Tree Nursery is looking for someone who is passionate about keeping things in tip top share, ensuring that preventative and regular maintenance is performed, and enjoys variety in their everyday task.
The Ferguson Tree Nursery specializes in growing native trees, shrubs and perennials in fields, greenhouses and hoop houses. This means we have a variety of buildings including office space, coolers, freezers, greenhouses, hoop houses, garage, staff housing and agriculture storage facilities.
In addition, we have farm equipment, UTVs, forklifts, and a variety of other implements and machine. Our grounds maintenance includes mowing and snow removal around the nursery and at our staff housing plus trails maintenance.
Your Role
The Building, Equipment and Grounds Maintenance Manager is responsible for the smooth running of the physical plant at Ferguson Tree Nursery. This includes ensuring preventative and regular maintenance and repairs for buildings, greenhouses, coolers, freezers, furnaces, farm equipment, vehicles, irrigation equipment and generators, as well as performing snow removal, mowing, and other physical infrastructure. This is a hands-on position requiring someone with excellent construction and mechanical abilities to allow for any work that is reasonable to be completed in-house. Key responsibilities include:
• Managing seasonal staff hired to assist in grounds and trail maintenance, possibly including summer students and interns. This includes mentoring, training, clearly communicating work expectations and managing their performance.
• Working closely with Senior Management to set, document and implement policies, procedures and systems and follow through with implementation in a timely manner.
• Providing input to the annual budgeting process, assessing your unit’s needs for the upcoming year and then managing to budget.
• Performing preventative maintenance and general repairs in a variety of buildings on the Nursery. This will include:
o Undertaking minor/medium level construction, plumbing and mechanical repair projects
o For major repairs, scoping out the work, coordinating competitive bids, communicating situation with management, supervising contractors, and ensuring work delivered is high quality, on time and on budget
o Regularly inspect and do maintenance as required on various buildings and mechanical assets such as furnaces, pumps, coolers, freezers, greenhouse motors, louvres and fans, greenhouse watering systems
o Work with other staff on spring start-up and fall shut down procedures of mechanical and watering systems
o Coordinate annual inspections for alarms, fire extinguishers and other safety and compliance-related situations
• Performing regular vehicle and equipment maintenance for trucks, UTVs, forklifts, tractors and other greenhouse and farm equipment
Are You Up for the Challenge?
To be successful in this role, you have excellent time and task management skills to keep track of multiple projects across the Nursery over time. You have excellent interpersonal and communications skills, allowing you to work collaboratively with Nursery staff at all levels as well as manage contractor relationships while holding them accountable. Other keys to success include:
• 3-5 years experience with vehicle and equipment maintenance (preferred)
• 3-5 years experience in building maintenance including heating and cooling, motors, plumbing, electrical and/or carpentry (preferred)
• 2-3 years of supervisory experience in industrial or commercial building maintenance (preferred)
• Trades certificates, relevant college diplomas or apprenticeship experience are an asset.
