Role & Responsibilities: 

As the Director of Care you would be responsible for the coordination and implementation of resident care, based upon pre-established standards, to ensure quality of life for each individual resident. Drawing on their extraordinary leadership, organizational and communication skills, the successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following: 

Resident Relations:

·         To ensure that residents receive care & service (including housekeeping & laundry) to meet their needs;

·         To monitor the well-being of those residents who are not requiring care;

  • Plans, develops, organizes , implements and evaluates overall quality of nursing, housekeeping and laundry services;

·         Schedule, perform and complete daily routines for all staff in Care & Service department, including staff scheduling & hiring);

·         Establishes and develops job descriptions and performance evaluation criteria which delineates job responsibilities and expectations;

·         To complete paperwork necessary for admission and discharge of a resident and on-going documentation;

·         Effectively uses the nursing (including housekeeping & laundry) process of assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating to provide high quality nursing (including housekeeping & laundry) care to the residents;

·         Ensures that the resident and/or his/her family are involved, where appropriate, in decisions affecting his/her care and service;

·         Establishes priorities based on individual resident’s needs, scheduled activities and adjusts these priorities and activities to manage unanticipated events;

  • If necessary applies/implements, but not limited to, infection control, health and safety, wound management, pain control, care planning, and classification;
  • The development and management of the nursing/housekeeping/laundry department budget, including all costs with supervising and support from Assistant Manager & Managing Partner

Leadership:

·         Participates as a member of the work team and provides support to the other members of the team;  Understands the “team-building” process and consistently applies the principles;

·         To promote wellness;

·         To assume responsibility for the retirement community in the absence of the Managing Partner(rotation of departmental managers);

·         Involved with the hiring, firing and training of staff who will be working directly with residents;

·         To work alongside, monitor and supervise the members/supervisors of the care & service team;

·         Provides additional monitoring of the Service Team Supervisor and Service Team Members providing direct care to the resident;

  • 24hour & 7 days a week on call (rotation with Assistant Director of Care);

Regulatory Compliance:

·         Functions within current legislation(such as local health unit, RHRA, ORCA, etc) affecting the practice of nursing and within the approved policies and procedures of the Residence;

·         Completes audits as required;

Operational and Administrative Systems:

·         Is responsible for the safe administration and storage of medication in the home.  Delegates where appropriate;

·         Maintains accurate charts for each resident;

·         Ensure a safe environment for the resident and/or his/her family;

·         Refers, reports and records pertinent information related to the resident’s care to other health care team members;

·         Co-ordinates and/or carries out the action plan related to the prescribed care plan;

·         Communicates effectively with physicians, pharmacy and other professional care providers;

·         Collaborates with other members of the Care and Service Team in the planning, provision and evaluation of services;

·         Provides necessary in-service training and orientation of new employees with the guidance of the Managing Partner;

·         Holds regular department meetings;

 

Other job expectations:

·         To participate, plan and attend buzz-worthy resident/community events;

·         Regular community outreach to hospitals, medical clinic, CCAC clinic any healthcare-related services to the Residence;

·         Intra-entrepreneurship needs to be key area of focus such as additional revenue for lab service, foot care specialist, care & service-by-design, etc;

·         Is responsible for her/his actions;

·         Is responsible for maintaining and upgrading his/her competence related to the clinical practice and professional responsibility;

·         Seeks help and guidance when necessary;

·         All other related duties as assigned;

Requirements:

  • Current registration as Registered Nurse (RN)/Registered Practical Nurse (RPN).
  • Current CPR and First Aid.
  • Experience in geriatric, rehabilitation or long-term care nursing is desirable.
  • Experience with Dementia/Alzheimer’s care is an asset.
  • Must demonstrate excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must demonstrate an active interest in ongoing education and participate in mandatory educational in-services.
  • Must be computer literate.
