DELIVERY-LUMBER YARD ASSOCIATE

The primary responsibility of the Lumber Yard Associate is to assist do-it-yourself and contractor customers by loading and unloading merchandise into, or from the customers vehicles, assisting with lumber selection and cutting materials to the customer’s specifications. Lumber Yard Associates unload company vehicles and load and unload materials for delivery to customers and storage in the yard. You work both indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to inclement weather, including hot and cold temperatures. This position works under close supervision and must work closely with customers, store management and store staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Customer Service – provide customer service through courteous, efficient and attentive service in a timely manner. Effectively share product knowledge and provide direction as necessary to meet the needs of the customers. Assist customers in pulling lumber. Keeping a business-like appearance and interactions with customers.
  2. Equipment Operation – Must be able to operate a standard transmission vehicle. Able to operate winches and other devices to load and unload materials onto and off of trucks and loading docks. Operate industrial trucks, tractors, loaders and other equipment to transport materials to and from warehouses. Cut lumber, glass and pipe to customers specifications. Follow safety procedures and use all safety equipment.
  3. Capable of Operating a forklift and truck with a boom is an asset.
  4. Loading and Delivery – Verify loading ticket and customer authorization to pick up merchandise. Use receipt to confirm merchandise was paid for and the correct amount of merchandise to load. Load and unload merchandise into customer and company vehicles. Deliver lumber and merchandise to customers in a safe and timely manner.
  5. Product Knowledge – General knowledge of lumber yard merchandise, including but not limited to, location and pricing. Direct customers to sales clerks for further merchandise assistance.
  6. Stock – Stock incoming freight neatly in appropriate locations and under cover as needed. Ensure all incoming yard stock is put away in a timely manner to ensure easy access, safety and loss control.  Regularly communicate with department lead, inventory specialist, cashiers and managers regarding inventory concerns, stock outages, merchandise damage and loss and other departmental issues.
  7. Housekeeping – Keep yard swept, organized, clean and hazard free. Assist in organizing and maintaining the lumber yard.
  8. Loss Control – Use shoplifting indicators and excellent customer service to deter and prevent shoplifting. Consistently check loading ticket and receipt to confirm payment and correct amount of merchandise to load.

Other Duties:

  1. Complete tasks on work list as assigned
  2. Completing safety courses as required.
  3. Use Yard forklifts as needed.
  4. Exchange customer propane tanks as required and applicable.
  5. Assist receiving and garden departments with freight with freight as required
  6. Distribute unloaded merchandise to correct department as needed.
  7. Follow all policies and procedures in the yard including sales, inventory and safety.
  8. Properly use and maintain all equipment.
  9. Perform other duties as needed.
